This has taken place not too long ago in a town nearby.

A group of teenagers has been charged with animal cruelty and other offences after allegedly breaking into a Camrose home and using the microwave to kill the family's cat.

"I've been a police officer here for 25 years and I have never run across this kind of a situation," said Insp. Lee Foreman of the Camrose Police Service. "I'm sure you share the same disgust as I do."

Police believe the house was broken into during the early hours of Dec. 29, when a group of suspects stole several items and vandalized the interior. No one was home at the time as the residents were away for a post-Christmas holiday.


The home was re-entered on Dec. 30, when more damage was caused. Police believe this is when the suspects put the family cat in the microwave and turned it on.

"We sent the cat to be autopsied, so that has yet to be confirmed, but that is what we surmise," Foreman said.

A friend of the family who was checking the home discovered the dead cat inside the microwave later on Dec. 30.

Frank Snopek said he was awakened by a noise in the early morning hours of Dec. 30. He went outside to investigate, and saw a woman in the backyard of the neighbour's house, crying.

When he asked her what was wrong, she told him that someone had broken into the house and that the family's pet cat was in the microwave.

The woman was keeping an eye on the house and feeding the cat for the family -- a mother and father and three teenage children; two girls and a boy -- who were in Saskatchewan for Christmas.

"I went into the house to see what had happened and here is this cat in the microwave," said Snopek.

The words "Nice cat, look in the microwave" were scrawled in felt pen on the kitchen window and on the glass of the kitchen cabinets.

Snopek said there was considerable damage downstairs, where windows were broken and a television smashed.

"It was just wrecked," he said.

Snopek said the family had had the cat, a black and orange tabby, since he and his wife Rose moved into the neighbourhood just over five years ago.

"It was a nice little cat, very friendly," said Snopek. "It used to follow the kids down the street. It was a good mouser, too."

Snopek said the teens who've been charged are friends of one of the couple's daughters, and knew the house would be unoccupied over Christmas.

"They have to be off the deep end to do something like this, it's pretty sad," he said.

After an investigation, Camrose police arrested three 15-year-old boys as well as a 13-year-old boy, Foreman said.

The teens are facing charges of unlawfully killing an animal, unlawfully causing pain or suffering to an animal, break, enter and theft, mischief, and possession of stolen property. They are scheduled to appear in youth court in Camrose on Feb. 7 at 9:30 a.m.

These kids names have been leaked over the web and have been facing death threats in mail, e-mail, face book , myspace and nexopia. I think they deserve it.

I dont care how much people want to argue about how at 13 and 15 they arent smart enough to realize how fucked up it was, and thats bullshit. At 13 I was certainly not stupid enough or cruel enough to kill animals. I actually kicked someone in the balls once for trying to cut my cats whiskers. People who do this shit for fun dont need to reproduce anyways, they should be kicked in the nads. I feel so bad for that poor family, it's bad enough to come home from vacation to a ravaged home, but seeing, or even knowing that someone murdered your animals in the cruelest fashion possible....wow. If it was my house or cat you'd have to keep those little bastards away from me, because I would castrate them and then stick em in an oven.

A 1997 study by the MSPCA and Northeastern University found that 70% of animal abusers had committed at least one other criminal offense and almost 40% had committed violent crimes against people.

A 1986 study reported that 48% of convicted rapists and 30% of convicted child molesters admitted perpetrating acts of animal cruelty in their childhood or adolescence. (Tingle et al, 1986)

The New Jersey study also found that in 2/3 of these cases, the abusive parent had injured or killed a pet and in 1/3 of the cases, children were the animal abusers.

A study by the Royal SPCA in Great Britain found that 83% of families with a history of animal abuse had also been identified by social service agencies as at-risk for child abuse or neglect. (Hutton, 1981)
