I agree, in part. Guys like O'Neill, Tino, and Bernie were great for the Yankees because they were able and willing to do the little things to get a job done - hit to the right side to move a guy from second t third, go the other way, take a walk in a big situation.

However, Cabrera and Cano are developing into that type of player. Jeter still is. As is Matsui.

The minor league system is actually pretty good. The trades of Sheffield and Johnson netted some good pitchers. And Henn, DeSalvo, and Hughes are ready to help now, AND in the near future.

With the current ptiching, and the lineup, it ain't over yet this year, nor is it over for next year.

I think the problem YL is that they are mixing the solid team with the mercs and it isn't working out. Take Clemens for example. In his first run with the Yanks he was a team player and fit in across the board. Now he is just a merc and they should have just doen with-out him.

I am VERY glad they dumped Johnson, not so much Sheff, but if they were moves to form more of a "team" then great. However, getting Damon and Clemens while pandering to A-Fraud and not looking after their loyal guys is not moving in the right direction.

Don't get me wrong I think we'll be in the postseason and once there anything can happen. But I am not confident that the franchise is making the right moves, I think to a certain extent they win despite themselves.

I know what you're saying, but I actually like the moves, with the exception of Sheffield.

Abreu is a good player. Clemens, hell, even as a merc, I'll take what he gives rather then playing farm system roullette. The rotation tanked this year. With a chance to get Clemens, who will keep you in most games even if he's no longer dominant, they had to do it. Mussina is a #4 or 5 starter these days. Wang is a legit #1, Petite is a solid 2 or 3. With Clemens and Hughes in the rotation, it's good.

I WOULD like to see them grab Torii Hunter this winter, and lose Damon. Otherwise, they have to move Damon to first, let Cabrera play CF, and find a DH.

The problem with Sheffield is that the Yankees might have given Detroit the gift it desperately needed. Even an unhappy Sheffield would have been good.

I agree with the pitching except for Clemens. And I really agree with going for Hunter.

A perfect Yankee off-season to me, reguardless of how the season ends would be something like this.
1) Let A-Rod go, period.
2) Re-sign Posada.
3) Do not attempt to work with Clemens being a part time player ever again.
4) Dump Jason Giambi by any means possible.
5) Sign Torii Hunter as the new CF.
6) Sign Carlos Zambrano to be the new #1 SP.
7) Let Abreu go and move Milk/Damon to RF/DH
8) Sign a solid 3B (maybe Mike Lowell?)
9) Re-sign Rivera but get the next closer ready as well.
10) Keep Joe Torre as long as he wants to stay.

Eric Gagne would be nice. I agree with your calls...but I would like to keep A-Rod.

I'll admit to being anti-rod from jump. But I also don't believe in paying 30% of your payroll to one guy when you have 30+ guys. What he wants is too much for any team even with Big Stein's pocketbook. Especially since with the trade we were at least getting Texas to pay part of his bill, but since he is opting out we'd have to pay all of whatever he resigns for. He's just not worth it, no one is to anyone wanting a real team.
