Actually I think you may have to make it the avatar size or it won't work... Not sure though

The best I can tell you is that avatars can be 150x150 or 4.0 GBs.

Seems to me (and yes, I'm admittedly computer illiterate) that if your .gif is less then 4 gigs, you can choose it the same way you would anything else.
