Default Suggestion for moderator policies and practices

1. No single moderator can delete or edit posts or threads. At least one other moderator or administrator must agree before the deletion or edit. If a deletion is performed, both mods must publicly post their reason(s) for doing so.

2. If a second moderator or administrator isn't available, a thread can be locked or even moved to an area where it will not be available to the average user for up to 24 hours so that other mods or admins can be consulted.

3. No moderator can delete a thread in which they have been participating. Admin would be exempt from this rule, as well as a mod implementing rule #4.

4. It wouldn't hurt if a public warning in the thread in question was posted by a mod before any action was taken, but circumstances would ultimately determine if this was feasible.

I feel that implementing these policies will help eliminate some of the negative perceptions the forum members have about moderator and administrator performance.

I'm not as worried about moderator behavior as some are.

Sometimes you have to take care of stuff quickly and don't have time to get a hall pass from the assistant principal.

If a mod deletes stuff they get publicly ridiculed - that's probably deterrent enough.

I don't know if I agree with this. So far public criticism hasn't been much of a deterrent at all.

Maybe, as an alternative, there should be a ranking among mods. Experienced mods are responsible for mentoring inexperienced mods for a period of time. During that apprenticeship, the inexperienced mod can't delete or edit without the mentor agreeing.

I think people that complain about mods should have to become one.

I'm not qualified, I've never moderated a forum before. Oh wait... I guess I am qualified. :2thumbs:

whats the point then to having mods if they need someone else to hold their hand in modding/editing/deleting posts?

It's more realistic to move threads to the mod forum, wait for consensus and then move it back or delete/edit it.
